Attention Veterans and Active Military: Your Education Awaits

Veterans who return home after active service can find returning to civilian life difficult. Some struggle with the day-to-day challenges of family life and reacclimating into society. And many find reentering the civilian workforce daunting and even impossible.

While the veteran unemployment rate has dropped in recent years to a low of 4.7%, according to a 2015 report by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), more than half of all returning veterans experience a period of unemployment within 15 months of separation. Findings in the report also indicate that veterans who lack postsecondary education or training certification have more difficulty finding employment than their civilian counterparts.

Fortunately, there are various programs and services available to assist and support active duty military and veterans. One such benefit program is the GI Bill®. According to the VA report, the Post-9/11 GI Bill® is a “key strategy to improve veterans’ and their family’s economic opportunity.”

Veterans and active duty military ready to begin or return to school should first educate themselves on the options available to make sure they have picked the right college for their needs. In addition to certifying an institution’s accreditation, they should ensure that their college of choice offers the following:

  • Federal aid and grant application assistance to help fill in any funding gaps
  • Programs that are relevant and high in demand in the workforce, such as medical and information technology
  • Designated personnel who provide support and assistance to veterans and military members
  • Flexible schedules for active service members and working veterans
