Medical Billing and Coding Program

Medical Billing & Coding Certification: YES, AA Degree option also available

Medical Coders and Billers are significant contributors in the healthcare field. Without their attention to detail, the healthcare industry would be unable to transmit critical data that allows medical professionals to get paid for their service. It is the Medical Coder’s job to translate the medical provider’s notes from the patient visit into a numeric or alphanumeric code which in turn is used by the Medical Billers to produce a claim for the insurance company or a bill for the patient. Asher College’s Medical Billing and Coding Program teaches students how to fill valuable roles in the healthcare field. We start with familiarizing students with end-user software, and the importance of HIPAA (Health Information Portability and Accountability Act) in our Microsoft and Medical Laws and Ethics courses.

Understanding the language of medicine is crucial to documenting what transpires during the care of each patient. For this reason, the Medical Billing and Coding program includes Medical Terminology, Electronic Health Records (EHR), Anatomy & Physiology and Medical Billing courses. Our blended learning environment allows students to apply their knowledge by reading about it, watching courseware and video instruction, attending lectures with our instructors and industry experts, and experiencing hands-on learning labs. This knowledge is useful in Billing with practice on CMS1500 and UB-04 medical claim forms.

The last two courses in the program are Advanced Physician and Advanced Facility Coding. These courses alone account for 360 hours of the program and are sought after skills due to the healthcare industry’s changeover to HER, and more recently, ICD-10-CM( diagnosis coding) and ICD-10-PCS (hospital inpatient coding) codes. Students learn how to utilize the CPT-4 (Current Procedural Terminology) ICD-10 (International Classification of Disease) and HCPCS (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System, often pronounced by its acronym as "hick picks”) manuals along with Encoder Pro Optum 360 software to look up procedural and diagnosis codes. When choosing where you fit in the exciting healthcare field, Billers and Coders should appreciate a 50/50 mix of dealing with professional healthcare staff and independently work with data. They should be detail oriented, like research, revel in digging through both paper and computer records, and work best with minimal supervision. Front office staff should enjoy working with patients and their families. Students in this program will be given five certification options. Once a student enters their last coding course, they will review the following five options with their instructor and schedule their exam.

  • CMAA Certified Medical Administrative Assistant / National Healthcareer Association
  • CEHRS Certified Electronic Health Record Specialist / National Healthcareer Association
  • CBCS Certified Billing & Coding Specialist / National Healthcareer Association
